Arenal Volcano National Park
Located almost 4 miles away from Fortuna in the Northern Region, Arenal Volcano National Park is one of the most visited destinations in Costa Rica. Several trails allow observation of much of the park’s flora and fauna, as well as the remains of lava tracts. There is little vegetation or wildlife to be seen in the immediate area of the main viewing site, nevertheless, this area offers a unique opportunity to witness the early stages of lava flow. Farther away, there are other areas that escaped direct damage and provide better wildlife viewing in the forested sections.
This region is also known for its hot springs, for the adventure activities available such as canopy and white water rafting and for the surrounding wildlife that include white faced monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, three-toed sloths, coatis, raccoons, ocelots and even jaguars can be spotted. Lake Arenal is currently the largest lake in Costa Rica at 85 square kms (33 square mi). Its maximum depth is 60 meters (200 feet). From November through April the strong, dependable winds attract windsurfers and kite surfers to its western end.
